How to Remove Different Types of Food Stains

Food stains happen to the best of us, whether it's a splash of coffee or a spaghetti slip! At Belmont Eco and Hawthorne Laundries, we know a few quick tricks to keep your clothes looking fresh. Here’s a brief guide to tackling common food stains:

1. Coffee and Tea Stains

  • Blot and Rinse: Blot the stain with a paper towel, then rinse with cold water.

  • Pre-Treat: Apply a stain remover or a bit of liquid detergent, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

  • Wash: Wash in warm water, but avoid drying until the stain is fully out, as heat can set it.

2. Grease and Oil Stains

  • Sprinkle with Baking Soda or Cornstarch: Cover the stain to absorb the oil. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes.

  • Scrub with Dish Soap: Use a few drops of dish soap on the stain and gently scrub with a soft brush.

  • Wash on Hot: Wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric to break down the grease.

3. Tomato-Based Stains (Ketchup, Spaghetti Sauce)

  • Cold Rinse: Rinse the stain under cold water from the back to push it out.

  • Apply Stain Remover or Vinegar: Dab a bit of white vinegar or a stain remover on the spot.

  • Wash in Warm Water: Wash as usual in warm water to lift any remaining color.

4. Chocolate Stains

  • Scrape Off Excess: Gently remove any solid bits with a dull knife.

  • Soak in Cold Water with Detergent: Let it soak for at least 15 minutes to break down the oils.

  • Wash: Wash in warm water and check before drying to ensure the stain is fully out.

5. Red Wine Stains

  • Blot with Cold Water: Blot (don’t rub) to absorb as much as possible.

  • Salt or Baking Soda: Sprinkle salt or baking soda on the stain to absorb the wine, then rinse.

  • Use Vinegar or Hydrogen Peroxide: Apply vinegar or diluted hydrogen peroxide, then wash in cold water.
